A couple of days ago, netways launched a fork of nagios.
The nice thing about open source is that it's a “free software”. The freedom to improve the program,
and release your improvements to the public, so that the whole
community benefits.
But by the end of the day, the problem with many OSS projects, you get lost in a jungle of forks, half-finished releases, bugy software and a bunch of betas. Self-appointed software gurus think they can do everything better. Instead of investing their manpower into the project they arguing and fighting against each other, who's right. Why not develop one powerful software for God's sake.
Given this fact, business customers often are forced to stick or go back to their proprietary software vendors, because they can't keep up with these things and individual egos.
I hope netways will do it better with icinga and all the best for them.
